24 Hour Girls Getaway: Leland

Our long weekend was chock full of different activities including house projects, family time and a super quick getaway. It felt almost like we had 3 separate weekends instead of one long one, each section felt so different.

The most relaxing part of the weekend was my one night trip to Leland to meet up with one of my best college friends. We stayed at a cottage on Lake Leelanau within walking distance of Leland's adorable downtown and Fishtown. If you saw my post from Saturday, you know how much I love that place. It can be super touristy and overrun in the afternoon, so we headed into town in the morning and enjoyed it while it was still cool and sleepy.

We grabbed breakfast sandwiches and sat outside my favorite coffee shop with delicious lattes for close to an hour. We had no where to be and the slight autumnal chill in the air left us aware that we should soak up the sun and warm days while they're still here.

I forgot to put a SD card into my DSLR, so all the snaps from the weekend are from my phone. It was relaxing to savor conversation and friendship without a camera. I have been working on treasuring experiences as they happen and not spending the whole time documenting them. It's such a delicate balance between recording the memory and enjoying it in the moment.

We bummed around, did a little shopping (I scored that beautiful indigo rug, and my friend got a matching one!), laid out on the dock, drank so much coffee and didn't stop chatting once. It was so good for my soul and I'm longing to be back. With signs of falls approach appearing, it makes me happy to know I squeezed one last summer-y mini trip in.

I really hope your long weekend was refreshing and filled with moments to savor.

Happy first (short!) week of September!

Leelanau Favorites

The Leelanau Peninsula is one of my favorite places in the whole wide world. The landscape is beautiful and the culture is laid-back and welcoming. It's one of those places that is fun to just wander around and explore. I am by no means an expert, but here are a few of my favorites in the area:

Free Things to Do:

M22   FOLLOWS THE LAKE MICHIGAN SHORE FOR ALMOST 120 MILES OF THE LEELANAU PENINSULA COAST. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DRIVE THROUGH A TUNNEL OF TREES WITH VIEWS OF THE LAKE AND CUTE TOWNS SCATTERED ALL ALONG.

Fishtown Leland is a perfect little tourist trap, in the best sense of the word. Old fishing huts house cute shops alongside still operational fishing industry.

We discovered Sleeping Bear Point somewhat randomly while out looking for a beach. There is a parking lot past the Maritime Museum and then you have a short hike on a sand path over a couple small dunes to the beach. We went back 2 days in a row because it wasn't crowded and the waves there were some of the best for swimming.

Free samples galore! Cherry Republic is known for their samples and for good reason. They have a shop filled with various cherry products and give you the opportunity to taste just about every one of them. It's super fun and I still kinda want the adorable black bear puppets they have there.

A bit further south, Point Betsie is one my favorite lighthouses. Take a ride down M22 to see it.

Eat + Drink:

Ugh, I wish this coffee shop could replace the biggby down the street from my office. The atmosphere is so calming and the coffee is super super tasty. I might have a crush on this place.

I'm such a sucker for atmosphere. I couldn't tell you a thing about the wine here , but I remember soaking up the sunset and the sophisticated farmyard feel.

Leelanau Cellers has been my favorite Michigan wine for ages. In fact the bottle of wine I bought on my 21st birthday was one of their Winter White. Their tasting room is super un-intimidating and chill, which is important to a casual wine drinker such as myself.

I recently noticed that Moomers was everywhere in the Leelanau area. I wasn't quite sure what the fuss was about until we gave it a try and I'm a convert for sure.

Other Activities:

I love meaningful, non-trinket-y souvenirs. Things I already intended to add to our home, but the fact that we pick it up on a special trip makes it more meaningful. When we walked into Darling Botanical , I knew immediately we'd be leaving with a little air-plant terrarium. You may end up with one of your own if you go here.

I can't believe we hadn't done this until our last trip up there. Pretty much this is classic Sleeping Bear Dunes . You need to do it at least once. You won't be disappointed.

This place is in the same building as Darling (above) and I would move in if they let me. Aptly names Wood + Cloth , I couldn't get over the textures and materials of everything they carry.

At the very tip top of the Peninsula, Grand Traverse  is a picturesque trip through the rolling countryside with a classic lighthouse at the end of your drive.

I hope to add new things soon. The whole area is just chock-full of beautiful views and quaint spots. If you have any favorites, I would love hearing about them. And if you plan a trip, I hope this gives you a good idea of where to start once you get up there.

Leelanau 2016

Happy Monday and first day of August!

I have to share a bit from our mini getaway this past weekend. It was our annual trip to the Leelanau/Traverse City area. We’ve gone up there the last three years at least once and every time we go, it gets better. This time we learned a couple more things and found some new favorites. I want to go back so badly (I’m already scouting out beautiful Airbnb rentals in the area).

We combined this trip with a reunion with some of our best friends after a year apart. It felt extra special to be on a beautiful vacation with people we really like. We spent a bit too much time in the car and in tacky shops, but since we never stopped chatting, even those less exciting parts of the trip were great.

We enjoyed some of the best beach days I’ve ever had on Lake Michigan and watched 3 stunning sunsets. Some of my favorite times were our meals on the enclosed porch overlooking the lake. I’ll share the cutest spots we discovered later, in case you want to plan your own trip and so I don’t forget for next year’s trip.

Life is good when you’re Up North with friends.

p.s. one little bonus of the prettiest drying lavender:

Quick Suttons Bay Getaway

Dave-man was off galavanting with his guys for a bachelor party this past weekend, so I took the chance to head up to Michigan’s wine country, the Leelanau Peninsula with some old friends. It was one of those peaceful, golden late August weekends. No stress, no schedule, just a little wine tasting, board games, a beach fire and lots of meandering open window car drives.

It’s funny to realize I’ve known these two friends since 7th grade — 10 years ago. It’s been so fun to have new experiences together and continue our friendship. There’s something so comforting about old friends.

I’m still soaking up each sunny day and while I’ll enjoy the next season, I’m not quite ready to allow this one to end.

Leelanau 2015

It seems funny to do a weekend summary 2 days before we head off again. Thursday is the start of a 4 day weekend for us and we just got back on Sunday from Up North. I’m far from complaining about a short week though. Yay for long summer weekends!

We took off as soon as I was out of work on Friday; we zipped out of town in Mikey the Miata and headed north to Glen Arbor. Our friend had rented a condo and we joined him for the weekend. We enjoyed cruising M22, strolling through touristy downtown Glen Arbor, and plenty of beach time and lovely sunsets.

It was about 75 degrees all weekend and perfectly sunny. Unfortunately Lake Michigan is still only about 50 degrees and way too cold for any swimming.

Sunday morning, Dave-man and I drove up to Fishtown in Leland and wandered around before it got busy. We loved driving with the top down and just soaking up the dreamy summer days. These are the days when we fall in love with Michigan all over again and again and again.

P.S. Michigan finally seems to be getting due credit for being a great place. Something us Michiganders have known for years.
